Wind advisory posted for Wednesday ahead of storm system

Winds were light today, but they won't stay that way for long.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory in effect for the Las Vegas area from noon until 10 p.m. Wednesday as part of a storm system heading toward the region that could bring light rain.

Southwest winds are expected to reach 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, forecasters said. Wind gusts over 40 mph will likely develop by early Wednesday afternoon with the strongest gusts blowing in during the late afternoon and early evening.

The weather service said winds could make driving difficult and boaters were being urged to use "extreme caution" in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Forecasters tonight are calling for partly cloudy skies with a low near 52 degrees and south-southwest winds between 7 and 9 mph.

Wednesday will bring a 30 percent chance of rain after 4 p.m. and a 50 percent chance of showers before 10 p.m. Skies will be partly sunny with a high near 66, the weather service said.
