Fire damages home in northwest valley

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue crews battled a kitchen fire this afternoon at a home in the northwest valley that appears to have started near the stove, fire officials said.

Fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said crews responded at 3 p.m. to the two-story home in the 8900 block of Ryan Creek Avenue after neighbors reported smoke coming from the house. The home is in a neighborhood near Centennial Parkway and Durango Drive.

Firefighters arrived to find thick black smoke coming from the home, Szymanski said. They forced entry because no one was home.

No one was injured. Dogs at the home were outside at the time of the fire.

The fire gutted the kitchen and caused heat and smoke damage on the first floor, Szymanski said. Black smoke also damaged portions of the second floor.

Fire officials believe the blaze was related to the stove, but the exact cause hasn't been determined.

Clark County fire investigators were en route to assess damage because the home is within their jurisdiction, but Las Vegas Fire and Rescue officials believe the fire caused about $75,000 in damage, Szymanski said.
