Clark County laying off 60 development services employees

A Clark County official says about 60 development services employees are being laid off because a building slow-down means they aren't needed.

County spokesman Erik Pappa said Friday the cuts might be followed by more in other departments as administrators wrestle with declining local tax revenues and budget decisions by the state Legislature.

He says property tax revenue is down $30 million from last year, and he governor's budget could cost the state's most populous county about $125 million a year.

Pappa says this round of layoffs will leave about 170 workers in a development services department that had more than 600 employees five years ago.

The number of building permits has dropped from almost 100,000 in 2005 to about 42,000 now.
