Afternoon sun brings Las Vegas a Saturday surprise

Las Vegans got an afternoon surprise today: Despite forecasts of steady rain through the weekend, early storms cleared for a mostly sunny back half of the day.

Parts of the Las Vegas Valley received more than one-third of an inch of rain and Mount Charleston picked up more than an inch of fresh snow, but a winter storm warning for the Spring Mountains was lifted well before forecasters originally said storms would clear out.

Forecasters said areas south of Las Vegas, including Laughlin and Bullhead City, are still likely to see heavy rain and strong winds tonight, and the Nevada Department of Transportation has issued wind advisories for U.S. 93, routing buses, trucks and RVs around the Hoover Dam Bypass bridge.

Winds at McCarran International Airport were at about 25 mph this afternoon with gusts near 35 mph.

The high today was expected to peak at 58 degrees before dropping to a low of 40 degrees early Sunday.

The National Weather Service said a slight chance of rain is possible overnight and early Sunday, but most of Sunday should be partly sunny with a high around 54.

The amount of rainfall Las Vegas received from the storm varied greatly across the valley. Downtown Las Vegas received 0.04 inches, while the eastern edge of Henderson got nearly 0.4 inches.

Presidents Day is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of 58, forecasters said.

The rest of next week is expected to stay dry in Las Vegas, with high temperatures increasing to 63 degrees Wednesday before dropping back down to the 50s Thursday and Friday.
