Bill to increase home energy efficiency appears in Senate

CARSON CITY – Sen. Mike Schneider, D-Las Vegas, wants contractors and real estate agents to push harder for energy efficient homes.

Schneider has introduced a bill that would require a contractor who builds a subdivision of more than 25 homes to offer information about retrofitting upgrades for renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The legislation also would require the contractor to help the buyer arrange an "energy efficient mortgage."

The measure, Senate Bill 181, would require real estate brokers and agents, mortgage brokers and real estate appraisers to take a one-hour course on energy efficiency as part of their continuing education requirement.

Energy efficient homes have lower utility costs, Schneider said. “Your power bill is 50 percent less, which means you can put that into a mortgage," he said.

His bill was referred to the Senate Commerce, Labor and Energy Committee, of which he is chairman.
