Mayor, councilman to present trophies for international soccer tourney

Mayor Oscar Goodman and Las Vegas City Councilman Stavros Anthony will present trophies and medals this afternoon at the close of the largest international youth soccer tournament in the country.

Goodman and Anthony will present during the Championship Games and Awards Ceremonies for the Las Vegas Mayor's Cup International Soccer Showcase at the the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex, 7353 Eugene Ave.

Anthony will present medals and trophies beginning at 12:30 p.m. The mayor will make presentations beginning at 2 p.m.

The tournament, featuring 332 youth soccer teams from around the world and some 6,000 boys and girls ages 14-19, began Friday. The players are from seven countries and 26 states.

The championship games will begin starting at 11:30 a.m. today at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex. Individual medals are offered for first and second places. Team trophies will be awarded to first-place teams in each age group.

Medals and trophies will be presented to winning teams following each championship game, beginning about 12:30 p.m. and continuing to about 3:30 p.m.

The event is co-hosted by the city of Las Vegas and the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club. It has attracted nearly 100 college soccer coaches and recruiters from across the county to scout for both male and female athletes.

Spectator admission and parking are free at all the games.

Roger Tabor, Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club president and assistant tournament director, said the total economic impact to Las Vegas is estimated to be in excess of $5 million.
