The District Attorney's office is asking for additional police investigation before formally charging a Mojave High School teacher who was arrested after officials found a handgun in a student's backpack last week.

Clark County School District Police arrested 32-year-old Heidi Jordan on Thursday in connection with child endangerment because she allegedly knew about the gun for three days but failed to report it to authorities.

Officials said Jordan, a three-year special education teacher at the North Las Vegas High School, was legally obligated to report the incident.

School police officers recovered the 9-millimeter handgun from a student's backpack Thursday morning after receiving an anonymous tip.

Police arrested two students — a 10th grader and an 11th grader — and charged them with possession of a dangerous weapon on school property and possession of an unregistered firearm. They were booked into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center.

The students allegedly told police they exchanged the handgun in Jordan's classroom Wednesday. They said Jordan saw the gun, and on Thursday she told the students to "be careful" and get rid of it, according to the police report.
