KSNV report takes aim at crime of sexual assault

Pinpointing Sex Crimes

KSNV special report on sex crimes throughout the Las Vegas Valley, Feb. 22, 5:00 p.m.

When it comes to sexual assaults in Las Vegas, no corner of the valley is unscathed, according to a special report by KSNV-TV Channel 3.

Led by KSNV reporter Marie Mortera, the report highlights spots in the valley that see the most sexual assaults. Metro Police provided a map to KSNV that pinpoints the location of sexual assaults in the valley over two years from 2008 to 2010. While there is a heavy concentration of assaults on and around the Strip, most occurred in a “shotgun pattern” across the valley.

“Every ZIP code in this county, we’ve had a sexual assault where we’ve taken care of someone,” the Rape Crisis Center’s Lu Torres said in the special report.

Many sexual assaults are also likely to occur between people who know each other or have just met, Metro Lt. Robert DuVall tells KSNV.

“If you commit a crime of this magnitude, when you’re caught, you will do serious time,” DuVall said.
