Handcuffed man nabbed for burglary takes Henderson Police car for a drive

Arrest location

A man arrested for burglary briefly eluded police this morning after he climbed to the driver's seat of a patrol car and took off, Henderson Police said.

Police spokesman Todd Rasmussen said the incident began about 8:30 a.m. when officers responded to a burglary call on Sea Holly Way, near Pebble Road and Wigwam Parkway.

An officer located the 19-year-old man near Green Valley Parkway and Corporate Circle, where he was arrested and placed in handcuffs in the back of the patrol car, Rasmussen said.

The man claimed he left personal property on Sea Holly Way, so police took him there to retrieve it, Rasmussen said.

When they arrived, the officer got out of the vehicle to speak to another officer outside, he said. At that point, the man slipped the handcuffs to the front of his body and climbed through a small opening of a plexiglass divider in the middle of the vehicle, police said.

"He slipped through really quick," Rasmussen said of the man's movement to the driver's seat. The man then drove away in the vehicle.

Police used a GPS system inside the stolen patrol car to track the vehicle, which the man eventually discarded about two-and-a-half miles away near Arroyo Grande Boulevard and Santiago Drive, Rasmussen said.

After setting up a perimeter, police found the man in a residential area near John Henry Drive and Reebok Terrace, Rasmussen said. He was taken into custody.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, faces charges of burglary, escaping and grand larceny auto in connection with the incident, Rasmussen said.
