A 16-year-old boy was critically injured early this morning when his car swerved and hit a block wall in the western valley, Metro Police said.

Police said the single-vehicle accident happened at 4:17 a.m. on West Rochelle Avenue, just east of Jones Boulevard.

A preliminary investigation indicates the 1990 Honda Accord driven by the boy was traveling west on Rochelle when he swerved left and apparently lost control of the vehicle, officials said. The car left the roadway on the south side of Rochelle and struck a block wall.

The boy was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit with critical injuries, police said.
