A woman was hospitalized Thursday after her apartment caught fire and she went back inside to try to rescue her pet cats, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue officials said.

Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls about 3:50 p.m. that an upstairs apartment in the 1500 block of Pinto Lane was on fire. When they arrived, firefighters found the 875-square-foot apartment engulfed in flames.

Officials said the woman went back inside the burning apartment at least once to rescue her five pet cats. Four of the cats died, and the woman was hospitalized with minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The woman told fire investigators she was in a back room and smelled something funny. She discovered a plastic tree on fire next to a table where a candle-type device had been burning. The fire grew out of control, and neighbors used at least four fire extinguishers in an attempt to put out the blaze, officials said.

The fire destroyed all of the apartment’s contents and did about $25,000 damage, officials said. No other apartments were damaged.
