Wintry weather in Northern Nevada prompts snow day for state government

CARSON CITY – Acting Gov. Brian Krolicki has declared a snow day, closing state offices Friday afternoon in Northern Nevada.

Gov. Brian Sandoval is in Washington, D.C., and he conferred with Krolicki in allowing state workers to go home early.

Sandoval said, “Due to the significant snowfall and the potential for hazardous traveling conditions, non-essential state employees have been sent home early and state offices will be closing this afternoon.”

The governor said the early out for state workers won't be deducted from their regular leave time.

The closure will affect Carson City, and Douglas, Storey, Lyon and Washoe counties.

Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno closed classes due to the weather and some school districts in the region canceled classes.

Krolicki said public safety and transportation officials considered recommending the closure about 5 a.m. today, but there wasn't the heavy snow at the time.
