Low clouds shroud the Hoover Dam Saturday as a winter storm system passes through the Las Vegas area in this view taken from the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. A storm system that passed through the Las Vegas area is expected to move to the east by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Scattered rain has been falling in the Las Vegas Valley today while snow has been coming down in mountains.

"It's widely varied across the valley and the region," said Jim Harrison, meteorologist for the Las Vegas office of the National Weather Service.

"There have been some gauges on the far west side of the valley that showed from .04 of an inch to .08 of an inch," Harrison said.

National Weather Service rain gauges by Boulder City recorded .04 and .08 of an inch today, he said.

By 3:30 p.m., the fire station in the town of Mount Charleston had received 10 inches of snow, he siad..

Harrison said some areas of the western valley could also see a few white flakes today, but no accumulation.

Rainfall reports included a trace this morning at McCarran International Airport, a trace at North Las Vegas Airport, a trace at Nellis Air Force Base and a trace at Henderson Executive Airport.

Harrison said he was about ready to expire the winter storm warning today for the Spring Mountains and Mount Charleston area. The higher terrain could get another inch or so, but overall the heavy snow is over, he said.

"We probably won't even get much in the way of rain tonight," he said. "There's still a chance, but we don't expect a lot."

However, as the storm moves to northwest Arizona, Mohave County will continue to get a lot of snow, he said. Also, Lincoln County to the north of the Las Vegas area will get more rain and snow, he said.

"Portions of Lincoln County north of Pioche, have gotten a foot of snow so far," he said.

Around the valley just before 3 p.m., temperatures in the valley were 49 degrees at McCarran International Airport, 50 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 51 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 47 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures in the valley reached a high of around 52 degrees about noon, which is about 13 degrees below the normal high of 65 for today's date. The record high was 87 degrees, set in 1986.

Temperatures in the valley are expected to drop to 47 degrees by 6 p.m., to 42 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 39 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Sunday's morning low will be 36 degrees and Sunday's high will climb to 54 degrees, they said.

At 5:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 48 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 44 degrees. The record low was 28 degrees, set in 1971.
