Small garage fire causes $10,000 in damage

An electrical short in an old fuse box caused a small garage fire this morning near Oakey and Decatur boulevards, fire officials said.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said tenants in the house noticed lights blinking and heard a loud noise outside, followed by smoke coming from the garage.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 8:39 a.m. at 1955 Mohawk St. and extinguished it in less than a minute, Szymanski said. The tenants, who all escaped safely, helped douse the fire by inserting a hose in a garage wall hole prior to firefighters' arrival, he said

The garage contained many flammable materials and liquids, including a cutting torch with large gas tanks near the fire, but crews doused the flames before they ignited the tanks, Szymanksi said.

Fire officials estimate the blaze caused $10,000 damage. Most of the garage's contents were saved.
