Boulder City employees donate leave time to sick firefighter

Boulder City firefighter Bill Wilson was forced to leave his post in September as he battles a catastrophic illness, so his colleagues at City Hall have decided to lend their time -- literally.

The city council passed an ordinance in December allowing city employees to donate leave time to Wilson, who has been using much of his own in the meantime. Bryce Boldt, personnel administrator for Boulder City, said this kind of action was common in small governments, and the city's staff members felt compelled to help.

"There's good support for Bill," Boldt said. "We hope he's back really soon."

The illness, which Boldt said he was keeping private out of consideration for Wilson, will keep him out "indefinitely."

Kevin Nicholson, the city's fire chief, said Wilson is "part of the family," and his absence weighs on the entire department.

"We're all concerned and very hopeful that he'll get well soon," Nicholson said. "I'm just extremely proud to be a part of Boulder City, seeing the support that other employees give to others in their time of need. It's just a great thing."
