Dog dies in house fire in northwest valley

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue was investigating a house fire in the northwest valley Friday that caused $10,000 in damage and killed a dog.

Firefighters responded at 1:43 p.m. to a neighbor’s report of smoke coming from the roof of a two-story house in the 3200 block of Sabino Canyon Street. Neighbors knocked on the door but could only hear smoke alarms and dogs barking, fire officials said.

The fire originated in an upstairs bedroom and was quickly extinguished, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said. The fire gutted the bedroom and caused smoke damage to the second floor of the house.

One dog died in the fire and another that survived was taken by animal control. No one was home when the fire occurred, officials said, and neighbors weren't sure who lived there.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and remains under investigation.
