University of Southern Nevada to change its name

The University of Southern Nevada, 11 Sunset Way in Henderson, will be renamed Roseman University of Health Sciences, effective July 1, the school announced on Thursday.

Founded in 1999, the private university offers several masters' and doctorate degrees in orthodontics, nursing and pharmaceuticals. The change comes as the school prepares to open a new dental program in South Jordan, Utah, this fall, the university said in a news release.

The name Roseman was chosen to honor the school's founder, Dr. Harry Rosenberg, and College of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Renee Coffman, said Diana Bond, chair of the university's board of trustees, in a statement.

Rosenberg and Coffman are "two outstanding individuals who played pivotal roles in the founding of the university and its growth into a vibrant and innovative institution of higher learning," Bond said.

The Roseman brand also makes sense as the university expands its scope outside of Nevada, Bond added, and it will prevent confusion with similarly named schools in the area.

The change was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees in December after a six-month process that included input from students, faculty, staff and alumni.
