A Metro Police officer shot and killed an armed man during a routine bar check Tuesday night inside of The Bar, 1987 N. Nellis Boulevard. Police said the man pulled a handgun out upon seeing the officer and aimed it at him. Police said it is unclear whether the man fired at the officer.

Two shootings that occurred last week in the northeast valley about an hour apart were related, Metro police said Tuesday.

Mauricio Hernandez, 23, of Las Vegas, was shot and killed by a Metro officer March 8 after Hernandez drew a weapon and pointed it at the officer inside The Bar, 1987 N. Nellis Blvd., police said.

On Tuesday, police said they have determined Hernandez is the same person who shot a man outside a home near Lake Mead and Lamb boulevards while the victim was taking out the trash earlier that same night.

Metro spokesman officer Jacinto Rivera said police identified Hernandez as the gunman in the first shooting after a witness picked him out of a photo lineup. Police are still investigating the two shootings.

In the first shooting, a man whose wife said he was taking out the trash was shot about 7:30 p.m.. in his garage in the 4300 block of Stockbridge Street, police said.

The second shooting occurred at about 8:50 p.m. when Sgt. David M. Toney walked into the bar for a routine check.

Hernandez pulled out a gun, racked the slide and pointed it at Toney, police said. Toney fired at least one round, killing Hernandez, police said.

Toney, 44, has been with Metro since January 1999 and is assigned to the Patrol Division of the Northeast Area Command. He was placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
