Metro IDs 3 officers involved in fatal shooting

Metro Police have identified three officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man during a confrontation Saturday morning.

Investigators believe the man may have fired at least one round before police arrived about 2 a.m. at his apartment complex in the 3900 block of Mountain Vista Street. He was armed with multiple guns and pointed a weapon at officers before he was shot, Officer Laura Meltzer said.

The three officers are Paul Kunz, Justin Marzec and Joshua Giese.

Kunz, 28, and Marzec, 29, have been with Metro since 2007. Giese, 28, has been with the department since 2006.

The three officers were each placed on routine paid administrative leave pending a review of the shooting.

The name of the man who was shot has not been released.

Dispatchers sent officers to the man’s home after receiving a 911 call from the location with an open line. Arguing could be heard in the background and someone asked another person to put a gun down, police said.

A family in a neighboring apartment said two bullets pierced their front door and struck two couches, though police have not yet determined whose weapon the bullets came from.

No one inside the neighboring apartment was hurt, though the bullets came close to a mother and her 1-year-old daughter.
