Committees restore money earmarked for schools that was lost in technicality

School districts fretting over a potential loss of millions of dollars in state money to support their students can now breathe a sigh of relief.

The Assembly Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee both voted separately Friday to restore $37.9 million a year to the school aid formula.

"We're delighted," said Joyce Haldeman of the Clark County School District. "We can sleep easy."

The staff of the two money committees discovered that the school districts had made a technical error in computing the basic support per pupil. So the committees on May 17 eliminated the annual $37.9 million from the state's distributed school account, which is the basic aid to schools.

The reduction would have meant an $81 reduction in aid for each student.

Haldeman estimated earlier that Clark County would have lost more than $27 million of the $37.9 million in each year. The Clark County School Board voted on May 15 to include the $27 million in its upcoming budget. And without the restoration, it would have had to reopen the budget.

She said she was happy the money was put back in the basic school support formula.

The action Friday by the two money committees means the basic support for each student is $5,590 next fiscal year and $5,676 in fiscal 2015.

It is now $5,374.

The basic school support for the coming two years to Nevada school districts is $4.8 billion.
