Joe Downtown: Homeless can receive free foot screening, shoes Friday

Foot screening and free shoes for homeless

Homeless people downtown will get a free foot screening and shoes tomorrow courtesy of Soles4Souls and Our Hearts to Your Soles.

Dr. Troy Watson, M.D., an orthopedic foot and ankle specialist, is coordinating the event in Las Vegas. Similar events are happening in 40 cities across the country.

Of the 850 pairs of shoes expected to be given away, Zappos, which relocated downtown two months ago, is donating 700.

The event will be held at the Salvation Army, 35 W. Owens Ave., beginning at 1 p.m.

"A pair of durable boots can fill a person with hope and confidence," Watson said. "It's a major step towards employment and building self-esteem. Our goal is to get them back on track to good health one step at a time."

Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away roughly 12 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes in 125 countries, currently distributing about one pair every seven seconds.

Joe Schoenmann doesn’t just cover downtown, he lives and works there. Schoenmann is Greenspun Media Group’s embedded downtown journalist, working from an office in the Emergency Arts building.
