Separation week
A week after Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer could barely find a single game to disagree on, they line up on opposite sides all over the place. With all teams now in league play, they go through all the matchups and differ on how several will play out. They also look back on last week's game between Bishop Gorman and Booker T. Washington.

The Bishop Gorman High football team received arguably its stiffest challenge from a Las Vegas-area opponent in the past five seasons Friday, leading by just four points at halftime against host Legacy before prevailing 31-18 in the Southwest League opener.
Legacy (3-2) recovered an onside kick to open the game and took a quick 3-0 lead on the first of two field goals from Julian Castro — he connected from 47 and 48 yards in the first half, and Gorman led just 10-6.
Still, social media was buzzing. Legacy was threatening to become the first team to beat the four-time state champs since 2008.
But Gorman’s ground game was too much in the second half. Russell Booze finished with three rushing touchdowns and more than 100 yards on the ground, helping Gorman extend its lead to 31-12 in the fourth quarter. Legacy scored with seconds remaining for the final margin.
“We played a little lethargic,” Gorman coach Tony Sanchez said. “We didn’t have the same energy (of past games).”
Casey Hughes had 111 rushing yards and a 59-yard rushing touchdown for Legacy with less than two minutes to play in the third quarter. That score trimmed the deficit to 17-12, but Gorman scored the next two touchdowns to avoid the upset.
“(Legacy) did a good job of playing first-down defense,” Sanchez said. “We need to do a better job of getting positive yards on first down.”
Devin Williams added a 5-yard touchdown run for Legacy. Gorman’s other touchdown came Jonathan Shumaker, while Ramiz Ahmed added a field goal for the Gaels.
Gorman’s last regular season loss to a Las Vegas-area opponent was in 2006. Since the 2008 loss in the playoffs to Palo Verde, Gorman has a 51-game winning streak against local foes. Until tonight, just one victory came by less than 20 points.
