Police: Man in custody after climbing onto roof, stripping

Updated Thursday, April 24, 2014 | 12:19 p.m.

A knife-wielding man who climbed onto the roof of a home in Desert Shores Villas is in police custody today after a five-hour standoff during which he took off his clothes, authorities said.

Metro Police responded about 6:30 a.m. to conduct a welfare check on a man acting strangely around Lake Jacqueline at Regatta and Mariner drives. When an officer approached the man, he ran, jumping over the backyard walls of the northwestern Las Vegas residences, Metro Officer Laura Meltzer said.

The man then climbed onto the roof of a home at Secret Harbor Court, where he took off his clothes and at one point and threatened officers, police said.

Residents in the cul-de-sac were evacuated as a safety precaution while SWAT officers negotiated with the man.

Police took the man into custody about 11:25 a.m. No additional details were available. Residents have been allowed to return to their homes.
