Wind advisory issued for the valley Saturday night

Strong winds are expected to blow through the Las Vegas Valley tonight and Sunday, pushing away heavy cloud cover and bringing back bright, sunny skies.

A wind advisory issued by the National Weather Service this morning says gusts of up to 55 mph are expected along the northeastern slopes of the Spring Mountains and in Red Rock Canyon. Winds will kick up across the Mojave Desert starting at midnight and last through about noon Sunday.

Temperatures today will likely peak around 70 degrees, considerably cooler than predicted on Friday by forecasters who believed Las Vegas could beat the daily heat record of 77 degrees.

“Cloud cover kept the sun at bay, and temperatures aren’t as warm as forecast,” said John Adair, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Las Vegas. “It feels nice and mild, but the cloud cover is a little thicker than we were thinking.”

Sunday afternoon should be warmer once the sun emerges and winds die down. Temperatures then are expected to reach 75 degrees.
