Deadline extended to submit claims for extended unemployment

CARSON CITY — Some 17,000 to 18,000 Nevadans who were receiving extended unemployment benefits before Congress failed to continue funding can continue to submit claims until March 1.

The state Division of Employment Security initially set Feb. 15 as the deadline to continue to accepting applications, in the event funding is restored.

Kelly Karch, deputy administrator of the division, said if Congress funds extended benefits — those beyond the standard 26 weeks — the state would be able to make prompt back payments.

Karch said he was not hopeful that Congress would act, but the state must be ready to process the applications.
