Clark County commissioners doled out 101 permits to businesses wanting to grow and process medical marijuana today during a marathon public hearing that stretched seven hours.
The commission approved 58 applications to grow marijuana in unincorporated Clark County and 38 permits to manufacture marijuana-infused edibles and oils. The commission also approved five applications to operate laboratories that will test the quality of the marijuana.
The hearing came two weeks after commissioners heard a first round of applications from businesses wanting to open dispensaries, where medical marijuana will be sold to the public.
While the number of dispensaries is capped at 18 in unincorporated Clark County by state law, no such limit existed for growing and processing facilities.
As a result, applications that met the minimum county and state requirements received swift approval from the commission.
The county approved just over 90 percent of the applications it considered today.
Among those receiving permits today were separate groups that included Brian Greenspun and Janie Greenspun Gale, members of the family that owns the Las Vegas Sun.
Commission Chairman Steve Sisolak supported approving as many qualified growing and processing facilities as possible.
“We wanted to make sure we had more than an adequate supply” in order to keep costs down for patients, Sisolak said.
He said some of the business approved today likely won’t make it to open due to the high costs of starting up a marijuana growing operation.
Commissioners rejected five applications today over concerns about a lack of growing expertise and poorly suited facilities.
Another six applications were withdrawn before being presented.
The successful applicants must now make it through a separate state licensing process that starts in August before they can open for business.
