13 injured when Metro Rail train, car collide in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — A minivan collided with a light rail commuter train in Los Angeles, leaving 13 people injured, two seriously.

Metro spokesman Marc Littman says the Toyota Siena apparently ran the red light shortly before 10 a.m Tuesday south of downtown Los Angeles and hit a northbound Blue Line train at an intersection.

Fire Department spokeswoman Katherine Main says 12 people from the train were taken to the hospital, 10 in fair condition and two in serious condition.

The minivan driver didn't have serious injuries and declined to be transported.

Littman says the 22-mile Blue Line between Los Angeles and Long Beach is no stranger to car accidents. He says a lot of drivers run red lights or turn illegally in front of the street-level trains.
