A man has been arrested after allegedly starting a house fire that killed three pet dogs and a pet bird this afternoon at Silverstone Ranch in northern Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded about 3 p.m. to reports of a fire at 6920 Briar Creek Lane, near West Grand Teton Drive and North Rainbow Boulevard. A caller claimed a person tossed something through a window, setting the house on fire, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

No people were hurt in the fire, which destroyed the bedroom and left heavy soot damage through the rest of the house. The pets that died apparently succumbed to smoke inhalation.

Szymanski said fire officials were working to determine what started the fire, while Metro Police officers are investigating reports of a domestic dispute that may be related.

The man, who was arrested several hours after the fire erupted, has not been identified. Police have not yet said what charges he may face.

The American Red Cross is providing temporary shelter to a woman, her daughter and an infant who live at the home but were not there when the fire started. The blaze caused an estimated $50,000 worth of damage.
