Oregon man dies while kayaking on Colorado River

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. — Authorities say an Oregon man has died while kayaking on the Colorado River inside Grand Canyon National Park.

Park rangers say the body of 31-year-old Curtis Joyce, of Portland, was recovered Wednesday.

They say Joyce was part of a private river trip of nine self-supported kayakers. The group was nearing the end of a 12-day trip Tuesday.

Rangers say Joyce was discovered capsized and unresponsive in his kayak Tuesday night near the Lower Whitmore camp.

They say members of the kayaking group unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate Joyce with CPR.

An investigation of the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

Park officials still are investigating last Saturday's death of a Texas man who reportedly fell about 350 feet from the canyon's edge.
