UNR football player battles brain infection

RENO — Nevada freshman football player Tucker Melcher has been hospitalized for nearly a week with a brain infection.

The graduate of Reno's Galena High School remained Friday in Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center's intensive care unit with what began as a sinus infection.

His father, Bubba Melcher, told the Reno Gazette-Journal that his son had an MRI on Thursday and swelling in his brain has decreased.

He says while that's good news, his son still faces "many obstacles to overcome" and doctors say Sunday or Monday will be a pivotal time for his recovery.

The younger Melcher, who walked on to the team last fall and redshirted, had been dealing with paralysis in his left arm and leg but was able to move them Thursday.

Bubba Melcher is a veteran Reno-area football coach, elite cyclist and former Wolf Pack football player.
