Arson suspected in tree fires next to southwest valley apartments

The possible arson of several trees caused about $10,000 in damage to an apartment building in the southwest valley this afternoon, Clark County Fire Department officials said.

Fire officials received a report about 12:55 p.m. that juveniles were setting plants on fire on Van Dyke Avenue, near Twain Avenue and Decatur Boulevard, officials said in a statement.

When police arrived, they found three 15-foot Italian Cypress trees on fire right against a four-unit apartment building at 3679 Van Dyke Ave., officials said.

The fire spread to the underside of the roof and the attic space of the building, officials said.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

All four apartments were empty by the time crews searched them, the statement said.

The Clark County Fire Department, North Las Vegas Fire Department and Metro Police responded to the scene.
