CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court has dismissed petitions seeking the removal of Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen over term limits.

The court unanimously ruled that Rick Workman, who ran against Hafen, had no standing to bring the petitions.

Workman alleged that Hafen held office in violation a constitutional amendment that limits terms to 12 years.

Hafen was first elected to the Henderson City Council in 1987. He was elected mayor in 2009 and re-elected last year.

Workman argued that Hafen was ineligible to hold the job in light of a Nevada Supreme Court opinion in a Reno case that derailed the mayoral bids of at least two termed-out Reno City Council veterans.

Justices in February ruled that city council members who have served the maximum 12 years in office cannot run for mayor and serve on the same governing body.

Reno and Henderson have similar city charters, whereby the mayor is a voting member of the city council.

In dismissing the petitions, the court said in its three-page order that “Workman has not identified any beneficial interest in outcome of the proceedings apart from any interest he shares with the community.”
