Man who killed girlfriend with beer mug sentenced to 25 years

A 62-year-old man who admitted to killing his girlfriend with a beer mug was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison.

Dana "Doc" Baker, 62, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in July. According to Baker, he and his girlfriend, Jennifer Evanson, 52, were fighting in their RV Sept. 19 of last year when he pulled her out of bed, accidentally striking her head on a nearby table. He then hit her on the head with a beer mug seven or eight times.

According to the police report, Baker told detectives he got mad at Evanson because she was seeing other men.

Baker called the fire department two hours later, when Evanson asked him to. He called and said there was a woman in the RV bleeding from her head.

Police received the call at 9:41 a.m. and arrived by 9:45 a.m. Evanson was already dead, with gaping wounds on her head.

Baker fled the scene before police arrived but was found in a tent in the desert near Las Vegas Boulevard the next day. He was found with blood on his shorts and shoes, according to a police report describing the incident.

According to deputy district attorney Richard Scow, Baker was charged with second-degree murder rather than first-degree because both Baker and Evanson had been drinking prior to the incident, making it unclear whether the crime was pre-meditated. Other than a DUI in 1993, Baker had a clean record.

He will have a chance at parole after serving 10 years in prison.
