CARSON CITY — By a 16-4 vote, the state Senate today approved a bill to allow the maximum speed limit in Nevada to be raised from 75 to 80 mph.

Sen. Don Gustavson, R-Sparks, said the state Department of Transportation would have the final say on where the limit can be raised without jeopardizing safety.

Gustavson said raising speed limits would help truckers and cut down on travel fatigue for all drivers.

A number of police agencies and the state transportation department testified against the bill, saying it could increase fatal crashes.

Voting against the bill, which now goes to the Assembly, were Las Vegas Democrats Aaron Ford, Ruben Kihuen, Pat Spearman and Joyce Woodhouse.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
