Blowing dust predicted for Tuesday prompts advisory

An air quality advisory has been issued for Tuesday because of expected high winds and blowing dust, county officials said.

The Clark County Department of Air Quality issued the advisory for Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Air quality officials also sent notices to the operators of construction sites in the Las Vegas Valley urging them to take precautions to prevent blowing dust.

Dust can aggravate respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and asthma, so officials suggest people at risk, especially children and the elderly, stay indoors during dust storms.

To keep dust down, air quality officials recommend taking the following precautions:

• Drive slowly on unpaved roads.

• Don’t take shortcuts across vacant lots.

• Only ride off-road vehicles in approved areas outside the valley.

• Fence off barren property or cover it with gravel, rock or desert-friendly landscaping.

• Limit outdoor exercise on windy days with dust in the air.

• Keep windows closed and run the air conditioner inside homes and vehicles to filter out particles.

• Change indoor air filters if they are dirty.

Call 702-385-DUST to report excessive amount of blowing dust.
