GOP Sen. Heller visits Legislature, talks federal priorities

Republican Sen. Dean Heller says he wants to take advantage of his new seat on the powerful Senate Finance Committee to reform the tax code without raising taxes.

The junior Nevada senator gave a speech Monday to members of the state Senate and Assembly as part of a series of addresses from the state's congressional delegation.

Heller pointed to a recent slate of companies moving to other countries as a reason for simplifying tax law.

He also highlighted his other priorities, including transferring federal public lands to states and passing a transportation bill to keep the federal Highway Trust Fund solvent.

Heller was appointed to the Senate in 2011. He previously served as a Nevada assemblyman, secretary of state and as a congressman representing Northern Nevada.
