California storm system brings strong winds to Southern Nevada

A wind advisory is in effect for Southern Nevada and part of southeastern California as a storm system from central California moves into the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory, which began at 3 p.m. and is in effect until 5 a.m., means experts are expecting gusts of more than 40 miles per hour, Weather Service meteorologist John Adair said.

Gusts of 63 miles per hour were reported near the Spring Mountain Youth Camp at Mountain Charleston, and winds have reached 40 miles per hour at Red Rock Canyon, he said.

Meanwhile, McCarran International Airport has seen winds up to 39 miles per hour, he said.

Brief, scattered showers are anticipated in the Mount Charleston area with a possibility of snow at higher elevations, Adair said.

No showers are expected to affect the Las Vegas Valley with the exception of some possible rain near the foothills of the mountains, he said.

A low of 48 is expected tonight with a high of 68 expected Wednesday in the valley, he said. The normal for this time of year are a high of 76 and low of 54, he said.

The wind is expected to back off for the rest of the week, with temperatures climbing into the low 80s by Sunday, he said.
