Hospitals want more money to treat Medicaid patients

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Hospital Association told a joint budget subcommittee today that the state is reimbursing hospitals only 56 percent of their cost to treat Medicaid patients.

Bill Welch, president of the association, asked the subcommittee to approve a 10 percent increase in each of the coming two years. The industry cannot sustain the underpayment, he said.

The increases would cost the state $53.1 million.

Welch said the governor’s budget includes a 2.5 percent rate increase in the second year of the biennium, but that won’t solve the financial problems facing hospitals.

The subcommittee did not take any action on the request.
