Welcome back, 51s.
The Las Vegas 51s' home opener today played out like many other Pacific Coast League games at Cashman Field during the Triple-A baseballs team's more than 30-year history in Las Vegas. Las Vegas and the Fresno Grizzlies combined for 30 hits and five home runs, and the game lasted more than 3 hours, 30 minutes before a fireworks show.
Las Vegas used a six-run sixth inning to grab a brief one-run lead, but Fresno had a pair of home runs in the seventh inning to take the advantage for good in an 11-10 victory.
Matt Reynolds went 2 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs for Las Vegas, knocking a two-run double in the 51s' sixth-inning rally.
Alex Castellanos, who went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, followed with a two-run home run. Johnny Monell was next, ripping a line-drive home run to right field for his third hit and a 9-8 51s lead.
But, in typical PCL fashion, the lead wouldn’t last for long.
Fresno, the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, used home runs from Andrew Aplin and Max Stassi to lead for good in the seventh.
Eight of the nine Las Vegas starters had a hit, including three hits from Castellanos, Monell, Brandon Allen and Kevin Plawecki.
The season-opening home series continues at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
