Senate passes bill to change public employee pension plan

CARSON CITY — A proposed pension plan that would trim benefits for those who become government workers after July 1 was approved today by the Senate 19-0.

Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson, R-Las Vegas, said the bill would save $1 billion in the next 10 years. SB406 now goes to the Assembly.

Nevada’s Public Employees Retirement System, which covers state and local government employees, has about 100,000 members.

The bill is just one of a number of proposals seeking to change the government pension plan this session.
