Nevada prison agency investigating shots fired at fighting inmates

ELY — Nevada's prison director says several Ely State Prison inmates suffered minor injuries after officers fired shots in the direction of fighting prisoners.

Nevada Department of Corrections Director Greg Cox released a statement Wednesday that the agency's inspector general would investigate the April 21 incident at the maximum security prison.

Cox says four inmates attacked another on Tuesday evening.

He says two prisoners kept fighting after officers demanded they stop and get on the floor. That's when Cox says an officer fired a blank round. After the two continued fighting, Cox says the officer per policy fired birdshot pellets off the ground in a skip shot that hit the two fighting inmates and five others not involved in the fight including one sent to the hospital for eye injuries.
