Firefighters extinguish blaze at apartment building near downtown

Firefighters put out an apartment building fire this morning near downtown Las Vegas that did about $65,000 damage, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials.

Nobody was injured, but a dead pet dog and bird, were found in the building, officials said.

The top floor of the building at North 14th Street and Mesquite Avenue, was fully involved in fire, officials said.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, but six people were displaced and were being assisted by the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter, officials said.

Multiple 911 calls came in about 10 a.m. about columns of smoke in the area, officials said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, officials said.
