Couple in stranded van apparently died of exposure, officials say

A man and woman found Sunday in a stranded van at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area appear to have died from environmental exposure, according to the National Park Service.

Only two bottles of water were found at the scene, and there is no cell phone coverage in the area, officials said.

The names of the couple from Golden Valley, Ariz., were not released.

The park’s Interagency Communication Center received a report about 4:50 p.m. that a passerby found two people dead in a minivan near Greggs Hideout, a cove southeast of Temple Bar Marina in Arizona.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office and National Park Service park rangers responded and found the victims in the van, which was stuck in the dirt on Salt Spring Wash Road.

The Mohave County Medical Examiner will determine cause of death and confirm the victims’ identities.

The incident is under investigation.
