Leaking package prompts evacuation of Las Vegas post office

Updated Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015 | 9:10 p.m.

A Las Vegas post office was evacuated this afternoon when a worker loading a truck noticed a possible leak inside a package, according to Metro Police and Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

Authorities were called about 1:50 p.m. to the King Station post office at 1801 Martin Luther King Blvd., near Wheeler Peak Drive, where the worker noticed a wet package with unknown contents, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

The fire department responded, as did Metro Police, FBI and U.S. Postal Inspectors.

An investigation revealed the package contained a "typical consumer product" that was not hazardous, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

The worker who handled the package was checked out and released, the fire department said.

The post office remained closed during the investigation and will be open during its standard business hours Friday.
