Number of businesses enrolled in state unemployment system hits a record high

The state reported Thursday that a record number of 62,500 businesses were enrolled in Nevada’s unemployment system in the second three months of this year and also that initial jobless claims filed dropped in June.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation said these were two more signs the economy is getting stronger.

Employers who pay a tax into the unemployment fund during the second quarter of this year increased by 900 compared with the first quarter of 2015. This was the third consecutive quarter a record has been set.

The 62,500 employers compares with the low of 56,000 during the recession, the agency said.

The department also said the number of businesses filing their first claim for unemployment benefits was down in July to 12,230, or 955 fewer applications than the preceding month.

Department Economist Bill Anderson said the drop in new claims “indicates fewer layoffs among the longer-term employed.”

Anderson said he expects a continued downturn in the number of jobless people receiving benefits.
