Henderson apartment fire causes $270,000 damage, displaces 8 families

Eight families were displaced by a fire that caused about $270,000 damage to a Henderson apartment building this afternoon, according to a fire department spokeswoman.

A neighbor reported the fire about 1:20 p.m. at the Highland Village Apartments, located at 301 Taylor St., near Boulder Highway and Lake Mead Parkway, according to spokeswoman Kathleen Richards.

No injuries were reported.

Though arriving crews didn’t see flames, they followed the smell of smoke and located the fire, which began in the attic space above an apartment around the air-conditioning units, Richards said.

The damage was limited to one unit, and the fire was caused by an overheated exhaust fan.

The resident of that unit wasn't in the apartment at the time of the fire.

Families from eight units were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada, according to Richards and the aid organization.

Henderson officials, Henderson Police and NV Energy also responded to the scene.
