Man killed by police on Sunday identified as Las Vegas resident, 57

A 57-year-old man fatally shot by police Sunday after they say he pointed a rifle at law enforcement officials in a west valley standoff has been identified as Las Vegas resident William Lee Snider, according to the Clark County Coroner's Office.

Snider died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Coroner's Office.

Dispatchers received a call about 7:30 a.m. Sunday from a resident reporting shots fired in the 400 block of Lakehurst Road, near South Buffalo and Alta drives, according to Metro Police Lt. John Sheahan.

A neighbor reportedly had multiple guns and was firing shots into the air while shouting, police said.

Snider was carrying a rifle and repeatedly exiting and re-entering a residence, and officers evacuated surrounding homes, police said.

SWAT and negotiators were called to the scene, but Snider wouldn't respond to negotiation attempts, police said.

He exited the home with a rifle, and when negotiators asked him to put it down multiple times, he instead raised it in their direction, Metro Captain Matt McCarthy said.

Police shot the man, and he was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead in the eighth officer-involved shooting reported in Metro's jurisdiction this year.

The incident remains under investigation.
