Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer spend some extra time on the three biggest games of the week — Arbor View at Desert Pines, Chandler (Arizona) at Bishop Gorman and Liberty at Saint Louis (Hawaii) — before getting to their full picks. They also discuss the hypothetical first pick of a high school football fantasy draft.

Quarterback Davin Dabbs returns for his senior season for the Eldorado High football team, giving the Sundevils one of the most experienced signal callers in the Southeast League.

With seniors Shane Barnes (6 foot 4, 185 pounds) and Carl Crayon (5 foot 8, 140 pounds) as his primary targets in Eldorado’s wide open offensive attack, the 6 foot 1, 205 pound Dabbs could add to his respectable passing totals from last season. In 2014, he passed for 1,434 yards and 19 touchdowns.

“It’s going to be fun,” Dabbs said. “I have a lot of other players to help me out. It’s going to be more of a spread offense, (with a lot of) throwing the ball.”

On the defensive side, Eldorado returns playmaking cornerback Michael Davis (5 foot 8, 150 pounds) and defensive lineman Terrell Michalowski. The unit will need to be much improved after allowing 32 points per game last year.

Last season, the Sundevils won their first three games, all against lower classification schools in the Division I-A. Dabbs tossed seven touchdowns and no interceptions in those games, but once Eldorado ran into Division I competition, their hot streak was halted.

Even though other schools in Eldorado’s league — Liberty, for instance — have more players to populate their roster, first-year coach Robert Cutts won’t use that as an excuse. He expects his team to be competitive.

“It’s not going to be the same Eldorado as it’s been in the past,” Cutts said. “We are doing big things at Eldorado.”

The Sundevils play Chaparral Sept. 3 in the Cleat Game, which is one of the most storied rivalries in Nevada. It’s usually a closely-contested game with Eldorado winning 28-21 last season.

“It’s very important because it gets us hyped for the rest of the year, and even for the other sports,” Dabbs said.

If the Sundevils can retain the cleat, it could give them the momentum for the remainder of the season. Eldorado hasn’t won a division game in more than three years, but a stellar senior season from Dabbs may be what it takes.

“Devon is our starting quarterback and he’s a leader on the field,” Cutts said. “I consider him a coach on the field.”
