Man charged after Las Vegas boy, 8, fatally shot himself

Updated Friday, Dec. 4, 2015 | 12:12 p.m.

A man faces a child-neglect charge in the death of 8-year-old Clayton James Singleton, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in October.

Jeffrey Hamilton, who is the boyfriend of Singleton’s mother, is being charged with one felony count of child abuse, neglect or endangerment, according to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office. If he were convicted, the punishment would range from probation to prison time, according to Metro Police.

Singleton was pronounced dead at the scene in the 9100 block of Wine Cellar Avenue. The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. Oct. 10

Hamilton had multiple guns in the home and failed to secure them, the DA's office said, adding that Hamilton also failed to provide adequate supervision by leaving Singleton and his 5-year-old sister home alone.

Two years ago, Singleton accidentally discharged the same gun that ultimately killed him, according to the DA's office. It was a 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun.

“This is a sad day. A young boy is dead, a family is grieving and nobody wins in a situation like this. However, at the end of the day, there are laws that I am obligated to uphold,” said District Attorney Steve Wolfson.
