Coroner names 3 killed in apartment; shooter sought

Authorities released the names Wednesday of three people shot dead in the kitchen of a West Las Vegas neighborhood apartment, while homicide detectives continued to seek a tall, thin man seen leaving the area.

Marty Cornell Young, Charlita Lashunda Carroll and DeAndre Leggett each died of gunshot wounds in the Monday evening shooting at the apartment on Jackson Avenue, the Clark County coroner said.

Investigators think the killings came during a robbery stemming from trade in crack cocaine, police Lt. Dan McGrath said.

Records showed that each victim had a criminal record, including felony convictions for Young in 2013 for drug trafficking and an attempted murder conviction in 2003 for Carroll.

Young, 37, also used the first name Morty. He also was convicted in 2002 of felony reckless driving and involuntary manslaughter, according to court records. His lawyer in the 2013 case didn't immediately respond to messages.

Carroll, 35, represented herself in court before she was sentenced in 2003 in Las Vegas to four to 10 years in prison. The coroner said she was shot in the head.

Leggett, 38, identified as a woman and also used the name Deandre Millise Leggett at sentencing last year to 10 months in jail in a misdemeanor battery case, according to Clark County District Court files. Leggett's lawyer at the time didn't immediately respond to a message.

McGrath said the three were kneeling or prone on the floor of the cramped kitchen when they were shot at close range with a handgun.

Witnesses reported seeing a man dressed in dark clothing running through an alley behind the apartment near B Street and Owens Avenue. One witness guessed the man was 6-foot-4.

An older model red or burgundy van with a tan stripe was also seen in the area, McGrath said.
